Another BrewDog beer for an even more belated stout Sunday today, another from Morrisons new craft beer range and another nitro twist on a previously released beer. This is ‘Choco Libre’ an 8.2% Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout. The name is likely a pun on Mexican wrestling Lucha Libre but I like to think it’s also a nod to one of my family’s favourite movies the Jack Black comedy ‘Nacho Libre’. Being half Spanish, churros and hot chocolate are a very nostalgic part of my life so I was very excited to dive into this one.
Jet black in the glass with the nitro creating a lovely tan head. As you pour the beer it really looks like classic churros hot chocolate. The nose is packed full of that cinnamon dusting and rich chocolate, it was like inhaling an air full of childhood. The nitro works so great with this beer giving it the thick creamy mouthfeel the hot chocolate would have. Flavour wise it is chocolate loaded with a really lovely faint kick of spice on the finish that compliments the beer well. Surprisingly masks the booze very well.
A quick note on the can art: Pink and silver for this one in the same style as the previous nitro. Same issue as well with the information being slightly illegible.
I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia talking but I absolutely love this beer. Nitro was a really good shout for this as I feel it adds the thickness you get from a proper hot chocolate. The flavours are well balanced with the rich chocolate playing well with the surprising spicy kick on the finish. Never had a beer with chilli’s added to it but I think it’s worked incredibly in a chocolate stout! For the price it’s probably the best value stout on the market. It’s also easily my favourite BrewDog beer I’ve had.
