Beer Review: Drink’in The Sun (0.3%) – Mikkeller

I popped into Sainsbury’s recently to check if they had updated their craft beer range at all and surprisingly they had! However, I’m starting with one of their alcohol free offerings. Mikkeller is a rather famous Danish brewery known for funky beers at rather expensive prices. Recently, I was told that they make rather good alcohol free beer so I thought I’d give their supermarket entry a go. ‘Drink’in The Sun’ is a 0.3% ABV American Style Wheat Ale. I have previously said that wheat beers appear to lend themselves well to no/low brews so I had high hopes going in.

Visually the beer pours a clear gold colour with a surprisingly dense snow white head. A slightly citrus and tropical aroma with a hint of clove. However, it is leaning towards that worty, raw smell that some alcohol free beers have. A fairly decent body to the beer with a wheaty, sweetness to it. With the bitterness on the finish it reminds me slightly of a lager shandy.

A quick note on the can art: Mikkeller seem to use these little caricatures on most of their cans. I think the bright colours make it stand out from other AF beers on the shelves.

This is not my favourite low alcohol I’ve had but it’s not too bad either. I have personally preferred a few of the other low/no wheat beers I’ve had. The flavours are okay and are not badly balanced but it’s not very bold. While the body is fine the flavour is just a touch thin. It does remind me a lot like a lager shandy, with that lemonade sweetness, which is perhaps why I’m not the biggest fan. That said my Mum absolutely adored it, so as always with beer, it’s down to personal preference!

Score: 6.5/10

Thanks for reading! Cheers!
