Beer Review: 5ft 9 in Cuban Heels – Pretty Decent Beer Co.

Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed a beer from my local brewery Pretty Decent. I’ve been drinking plenty in their taproom but haven’t got around to writing about any of them. Well I’ve picked up a few cans to start documenting the first being this one; 5ft 9 In Cuban Heels. This Double IPA, from a month or so back to be fair, comes in at 8% and has a hop bill featuring everyone’s favourite Citra as well as Idaho-7.

The beer has a hazy straw colour on the pour with a crisp white head. The nose is very citrus heavy with lots of grapefruit and orange peel to it, as well as hints of pineapple too. The body is thick. Citrus fruit flavour dominates the front end with a more hoppy, tropical finish. There is a touch of creaminess to it as well and it drinks very smooth considering the ABV.

A quick note on the can art: Might be up there as one of my favourite Pretty Decent can designs. Something about the jazzy trousers and the heels makes for a standout can.

Another very good Double IPA from the folks in Forest Gate. While not my favourite (I’ve had a couple of very good DIPAs from these guys) it is a still a great example of the style. Easy-drinking and couple slip down very easy in the some. Those fruity flavours are also rather well balanced with a nice level of hop bitterness that I personally quite enjoy. Looking forward to writing about some of their new Oat based IPA series soon!

Score: 8/10
