There are worse problems to have than needing to drink more beer. However, I do need to drink some more otherwise I’ve got no reviews to post! Thankfully, I have some brews in the cupboard. One of which is this Cosmic Drop from the “not so craft” Beavertown, who were bought by Heineken a while back now. There are a few different versions of Cosmic Drop which you can find on the shelves of your local supermarkets but this particular one is the Fruit Punch edition. It’s a fruit beer, brewed with raspberries and blueberries and comes in at a very sessionable 4% ABV. It also happens to be gluten free and vegan! Was certainly interested to give it a go.
The beer pours a cranberry juice red with an off-white head with hints of light pink mixed in. The berries are all over the aroma, again giving the notion of a glass of mixed berry fruit juice. The beer itself is fairly refreshing and as expected, rather fruity. There is a sweetness throughout but the beer reminds me more of Robinsons fruit squash than a fruited beer. This squash like quality is perhaps further enhanced by the thin body.
A quick note on the can art: Regardless of what your opinion is of Beavertown’s craft brewery status and the subsequent impact it has on the beer, I think most can agree the designs and branding are top notch. Nick Dwyer, who has done the breweries illustrations from the very beginning, for me, always creates an eye-catching impactful design, that draws you straight to the can on the shelves of the supermarket.
I think the quickest way to summarise this beer is to say; not for me. I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with it but I don’t think I am the target audience at all. While I haven’t had loads of classic European fruit beers, the ones I’ve had are completely different. Typically, in a beer like Fruli, it’s thicker, richer and more impactful flavour-wise. A Schofferhofer is really clean drinking and incredibly thirst quenching (reviews on both on there way!). This, as mentioned, tastes like squash. It feels a tad more synthetic or artificial as well as a little watery. It’s the kind of beer I can imagine myself drinking at a house party when I was 16 and really into Strongbow Dark Fruits. Those days are a distant memory, (and I tragically can no longer stomach a Dark fruits) but there will always be that demographic looking to drink a beer without it actually tasting anything like beer and as such I can see it selling well.
Score: 4/10
I feel like everyone has a drink they used to consume copious amounts of when they were younger, but can’t even fathom the thought of having one now. Whether it’s Archers and Lemonade or Budlight, I would love to know what it is!
