Beer Review: Ghost Ship (AF) – Adnams

West Ham United had a massive win against Tottenham yesterday afternoon and I did the peculiar thing of celebrating with an Alcohol Free beer. Crazy I know, as after my last AF beer the risk was high of it putting a dampener on my sky high mood. My tipple of choice was the 0.5% version of Adnams’ famous ‘Ghost Ship’ Citrus Pale Ale. They’ve been brewing for over 650 years and yet this is the first time I’m trying one of their beers (although I haven’t been around to try it for most of that time). Arguably no beer could be worse than my experience last week with ALDI’s AF beer but I still hold faith that this will come through.

The beer pours a clear chestnut, copper colour with (as per usual with AF beers) a quickly dissipating white head. The nose has a really good citrus aroma with a zesty grapefruit tang. Surprisingly good body to the beer for an alcohol free. Nice level of hop throughout providing a good bitterness from start to finish. There’s also a nice touch of citrus flavour in there as well helped out by some carbonation.

A quick note on the bottle art: Lovely sunset on the label with the ghost ship silhouetted. I nice little contrast to the night time scene on the original version.

Overall I’m very pleased with this beer as an alcohol free. From the moment I took the first sip I knew this was going to be one of the better ones. It’s crisp and refreshing and lives up to it’s citrus description. I think if you were blindfolded you’d find it trickier to tell it was an AF beer because the body isn’t nearly as thin as others. For £1.29 in Tesco I think this is a very solid option if you’re looking to cut back on the booze but retain some of that flavour. Goes to show what putting a bit of thought into an alcohol free beer can get you!

Score: 7/10
