Today’s review is a brewery back to back, with another beer from Gran Canarian based brewers Jaira. ‘Seaclouds’ is a Vienna style lager, and so typically features a darker colour, when compared to your more commonplace lager styles, while also having a slight maltier sweetness to it and often a toasted quality to the flavour too. The name ‘Seaclouds’ has been given to the beer as the brewery uses rainwater from clouds over the Atlantic in the brewing process.
The first aspect of note for this beer was the liveliness of the liquid in the bottle. I had to carefully pry off the cap for fear of explosion and attempt to catch as much liquid as I could, just to make sure there was something to review! Oddly enough, once poured out the beer had no head whatsoever. The beer had a very mild nose to it with a light maltiness to the aroma. The body of the beer was surprisingly well carbonated, despite the lack of head. The flavour had a slight tang to it but was also rather creamy.
A quick note on the bottle art: A simple and self explanatory design of rain clouds over the ocean. Nothing wrong with being straight to the point!
I personally quite like a Vienna-style lager. While it would not substitute for a cold crisp pilsner on a hot summers day a enjoy the greater depth of flavour offered by them. Comparing this to other Vienna lagers I’ve had, ‘Seaclouds’ for me, doesn’t provide the expected characteristics for the style that I outlined at the start of the post. The beer was fairly refreshing and not undrinkable, however the fact that it was so lively when opening makes me think that a secondary fermentation took place. And not in the desirable, bottle-conditioned way. It could be the ambient temperature it was stored at on the shelves of the supermarket in all honesty and nothing to do with the brewing process. As such it makes me wonder if potentially that has altered the flavour of the beer. While I would typically not write about a beer as a result of this, I still fancied cobbling together a blog post to keep the brain active but will leave the beer unrated until I can try it again under better conditions.
Score: N/A
Has anyone else had any explosive can or bottle horror stories? Comparatively this wasn’t so bad, I’ve certainly had the odd fruited sour explosion take place in the cupboard when there was no fridge space to store in the summer.
