Beer Review: Session IPA – Toast Ale

Today’s beer is one I’ve had kicking around for a while. This is Toast Ale’s Session IPA that can be picked up from Co-OP, Waitrose or Tesco. On the face of it, it seems like just another standard session IPA but it’s a beer brewed with a twist. Toast Ale beers are brewed with surplus fresh bread to help reduce wastage in the food production industry. A worthy cause if you ask me. Interestingly however, these beers are contract brewed for Toast by Hepworth Brewery in Sussex, so technically they aren’t a brewery in their own right.

Very lively beer on the can open! Pours a clear amber colour with a nice white head on top. On the nose you get a light citrus. This translates fairly well to a light citrus hop on the taste as well. The finish is slightly malty with a sweetness makes me wonder if it’s coming from the fresh bread used to brew the beer. Overall it’s a crisp, refreshing beer that I would argue is best enjoyed in the sun!

A quick note on the can art: Super simple stuff this one. Branding that is basic but eye catching with the bold ‘Toast’ taking up the real estate on the front.

On the whole it’s a solid but standard beer. Refreshing, light and crisp but nothing really exceptional flavour wise, which is perhaps to be expected from a session IPA. Most importantly I love the work it’s doing to try and curtail food waste and gains brownie points in that regard. The brand must be making some waves as I heard some customers discussing the beer in my pub the other day. Looking forward to trying their other beers to see how they match up as this is a fairly solid session beer

Score: 7/10

Thanks for reading! Cheers!
