Beer Review: Norse Star – Northern Monk x Lervig

Another beer from Morrisons new craft beer range and one I was desperately looking forward to trying. This is ‘Norse Star’ from the typically fantastic Northern Monk who have collaborated with Norwegian brewery Lervig (who are apparently stout brewing masters) to create this beer. This brew is a Vanilla, Cacao Imperial Stout coming in at a staggering 9% ABV. As with all Northern Monk beers expectations are high and they almost always meet them.

Pours jet black in the glass with a thin tan head. On the nose it is a fantastically overwhelming aroma of amaretto. All that almond and vanilla is in the aroma with the slightest chocolate mixed in as well. If a beer could be amaretto this would be it, as it is all in the flavour as well. Thick smooth mouthfeel courtesy of oats and lactose is ideal for a beer like this. Thankfully a super boozy finish saves this beer from being dangerously drinkable.

A quick note on the can art: Just simply another stunner. Naturally it’s got a viking theme to lend to Lervig’s Norwegian roots. The bronze and navy blue used is absolutely gorgeous.

They can’t keep getting away with being this consistent but boy am I glad that they do. Another stunner from Northern Monk (and Lervig). The first stout I’ve had from them and proof they can do the whole range of styles. It really is amaretto in can. As always with these 440ml heavy hitting ABV beers, best shared with someone I think simply so it can be enjoyed at it’s best. Morrison’s have killed it so far with these new beers and can’t wait to pick up some more… if they’re in stock that is!

Score: 9/10
