Beer Review: Escape With Me – Maltgarden

Something new for Stout Sunday today! While I’ve certainly had plenty of classic Polish lagers from the corner shop, this will be my first Polish craft beer! This is Maltgarden Brewery and their ‘Escape With Me’ stout at a hefty 7.5% ABV. It’s been brewed with added hazlenut, maple syrup and cinnamon. I think it’s either going to be well balanced or have the potential to be overly sweet.

Pours a cola like colour with little head retention to it. There’s an incredible nose to the beer that’s very reminiscent of a chocolate wafer. The hazelnut comes through heavy, and you certainly get a caramel or maple syrup sweetness on the aroma. Flavour wise there is a touch of cinnamon that works very well with the sweetness in the body. Although the beer is a little thin there is a great chocolate and coffee bitterness to the finish that helps elevate the beer. The alcohol is also masked very well overall!

A quick note on the can art: I love this design. It reminds me of a mixed paint pallet or even some abstract art with all the colours blending together. Very funky.

What a lovely first dive into a new brewery and Polish craft beer as a whole. There seemed to be a lot of negativity on Untapped surrounding the thinness of the body. And while I do agree it is on the thinner side I think it’s clouding people’s judgement on what I believe is a very well balanced beer, flavour wise. The added cinnamon does a great job at preventing the maple syrup from becoming sickly. Surprisingly drinkable and smooth for such a boozy beer which gives you a more enjoyable dessert vibe to it. Look forward to trying more from these guys!

Score: 8/10
