Recently my Mum treated me to some ales from a couple different breweries courtesy of some expiring air-miles! Loose Cannon is a new brewery for me based in Abingdon, a small town just south of Oxford. ‘Abingdon Bridge’ is their first ever, and most popular, beer. The bottle and website doesn’t actually say what style of beer it is but I imagine it’s looking towards being a classic bitter at the 4.1% ABV mark.

The beer pours a classic amber-copper colour with a thin off-white head. A treacle or caramel like aroma on the nose. Certainly a malt heavy beer with the hops complimenting the body with a recognisable English bitterness. On the finish you get a little bit of the treacle-like sweetness mixed in as well. On the whole, smooth drinking throughout.

A quick note on the bottle art: A classic English ale label. Always a fan of the traditional designs like this and I particularly the parapet underlining the name of the beer.

There isn’t too much to say other than it’s a good ale but nothing too special. I’ve had nicer bitters and I’ve had worse. It’s most certainly a beer that if it got pulled from the hand pumps in a local pub you’d be more than happy with what was served. There is a good balance between the hops and the malts with the bitterness and sweetness they provide respectively. It’s a beer I’d certainly have again if I saw it and was looking to scratch that traditional English ale itch. I’ve got one other of Loose Cannon’s core range to try, their golden ale, so I’m very much looking forward to that.
