I’m desperately trying to get through my beers stock at the moment as I have far too many. The good thing about this problem is I’m getting to try lots of beer from breweries new to me, including this one. Love Lane are based in the heart of Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle and I picked up their beer, ‘Baltic Berliner’, in Lidl not too long ago. It is, unsurprisingly, a Berliner Weisse sour beer and it’s been fruited with raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrants. It has been a long time since I’ve had a Berliner Weisse so I was looking forward to trying this out.
Visually the beer pours raspberry jam red with a candyfloss coloured head that dissipated rather quickly. The nose is is full of the raspberry with additional light berry notes mixed in too. The main flavour of the beer is actually rather light but there are touches of the blackcurrant and raspberry coming through. A little bit of sour sharpness on the front end but would prefer if it had more of a kick to it!
A quick note on the can art: Colour of the wrap matches the inside of the can which is always rather aesthetic. Once again it is a can design with multiple textures. Interesting why this appears to be so popular.
Overall I’d say this is a fairly decent beer but nothing too special. The aroma is great, with lots of fruit coming through. While there was a degree of tart fruit on the flavour, it needed to be bolder overall. Although I do believe blueberries have inherently little flavour so I am not too surprised that flavour was missing. All that said it was still a tasty beer that was easy drinking and light at just 4% ABV. Arguably, an entry level sour for those that haven’t yet gotten into the style.
