Beer Review: Eternal Haze – Northern Monk x Stigbergets

The supermarket beers that Northern Monk put out are of a consistently high quality so I was very much looking forward to giving this boozy collaboration a go. ‘Eternal Haze’ is a Double dry-hopped Double IPA at 8% ABV and is a twist on Northern Monk’s core range beer ‘Eternal’, which is a, substantially lighter, session IPA. I actually had the original on draft when I was up in Leeds recently, so was looking forward to trying it’s amplified big brother. ‘Eternal Haze’ has been brewed together with Swedish brewers Stigbergets, who I have never heard of before!

As the name suggests, the beer pours a supremely hazy marmalade colour with a fantastically fluffy, white head. The aroma is crisp and fruity with a shed load of pineapple chunk on the nose. There are also touches of peach and orange meshed in as well! The first sip you get is creamy mango with an insanely soft mouthfeel. Nice hoppy bitterness throughout but particularly on the end where you get a nice bite. There is no hidden booze in this beer, you are certainly reminded of the alcohol content with every drink.

A quick note on the can art: Gorgeous as always from these Northern Monk supermarket cans. The artwork is also a fun little twist on the Eternal can design, using similar motifs.

This is certainly an amped up version of the core range beer. It’s refreshing and packed with flavour from start to finish. The hoppiness is evident with great grapefruit peel flavours coming through and this bitterness pairs well with the juicer, softer tropical fruit flavours of the Mosaic hops. The strong alcohol kick keeps you in check however, preventing you from smashing it back. On the whole, it’s another very solid Northern Monk supermarket entry and there have been very few bellow standard brews from them. Whether or not I’ll have the opportunity to try a beer from their Swedish collaborators is yet to be seen, but I would love to get my hands on a lot more from Europe’s craft beer scene!

Score: 8/10
