Beer Review: Pink Lemon Loca – 71 Brewing Co.

Lidl have been really keeping the craft beers stocked up with back to back drops of new beers in the last couple of months. As always Scottish brewers 71 Brewing Co are frequent appearance makers on the supermarket shelves. ‘Pink Lemon Loca’ is perhaps one the more interesting sounding beers from 71 Brewing to make their way into Lidl. It’s a 4.5% ABV Lemon and Hibiscus sour.

The beer pours a coral red-pink, looking almost like a glass of pink grapefruit juice. The nose on the beer is fairly light with the predominant aroma being fresh lemon but with a little floral touch to it as well. The body of the beer has a lovely, mellow citrus flavour with the hibiscus giving off slight a slight taste of berries. There is a touch of sweetness to the beer which is pleasant but on the whole it’s not particularly sour at all.

A quick note on the can art: A punchy, vibrant can the most definitely stands out on the supermarket shelves. Gives off heavy carnival vibes.

I’ve had a few beers from the Dundee based brewery and I’d argue this is probably one of my favourites. While the lack of a little sour zip is a bit disappointing, the flavours are genuinely lovely. Lots of lemon, a little bit of berry and a balanced sweetness work well together. It’s very drinkable and most importantly it’s tasty beer. If you are looking for a sour to ease you into the style this might be the one. And at £1.79 it’s a beer worth taking a punt on.

Score: 7/10
