My local brewery, Pretty Decent, have got an amazing sounding release schedule for the next couple of weeks which kicked off with this beer I’m reviewing today. ‘Oui Chef!’ is an Oat Cream IPA that I was told is just shy of the ABV threshold to make it a double. It’s got added oats and and lactose to aim for that creamy, soft body that we have grown to love in our IPAs.
Visually the beer looks incredible. Pure golden haze that looks like a glass of tropical fruit juice. A surprisingly light nose for a Pretty Decent beer but the classic tropical fruits are present. Flavourwise, however, we are talking pure juice bomb! Mango, peach, pineapple are all popping right through. With the added oats and lactose it’s like a tin of fruit salad with a fresh helping of double cream on top. And despite being 7% ABV this is dangerously drinkable.
A quick note on the can art: I love that they’ve gone for unique designs now. The little chef is incredible cute.
I like this beer so much that I bumped it up my review schedule. I’d argue it potentially my favourite Pretty Decent beer ever and also the best beer they’ve brewed. Often with Pretty Decent, I find the nose to be incredibly pungent and the body to fall a touch short. Complete opposite in this case as it really is jam packed with flavour. I’m not usually a fan of lactose in IPAs, if not necessary, but I think they’ve made it work exceptionally well in this brew. Soft, silky and oh so smooth, it’s a NEIPA lovers dream. Chef’s Kiss.
