Beer Review: Mind Haze – Firestone Walker Brewing Company

Wow! It’s been a long while since I’ve actually sat down to write a review and not just posted something from my drafts. I have certainly missed it and hopefully I’ll start being able to write about more beer and maybe even get some nice snaps of pub beer gardens while we’ve got the sun. Anyway, today’s beer is one that’s been in the supermarkets for a little while now. From American brewers Firestone Walker based out of California ‘Mind Haze’ has been brewed in collaboration with Thornbridge for the UK market. It is of course a hazy IPA coming in at a proper American 6.2% ABV.

The beer pours a lovely hazy golden colour that is very appetising in the glass. The nose is fairly light in all honesty with just a little hint of the expected tropical fruits. What it lacks in scent it certainly makes up for in flavour. Fantastically fruity with big, bold mango and pineapple flavours. There is also a great little sweetness running through the body complimenting the soft, smooth drinking.

A quick note on the can art: An interesting can design. At first glance it isn’t too exciting for me but the blue hazy fog with hints of purple makes for an attractive wrap.

‘Mind Haze’ is a very high quality supermarket brew. Thornbridge are evidently following Firestone’s recipe to a tee. While the nose is surprisingly lacking the flavour is really gorgeous for a can you can just grab from the shops. Silky, thick and very juicy. Knowing the beer is originally from California, simply makes me really want to try the beer from the source, as there will certainly be variables that are likely to make the beer taste even better!

Score: 8/10
