It’s been a minute since my last review. I haven’t been too busy, quite the opposite actually. If you follow my Instagram, you may have seen me enjoying a beer on the beach in Port De Soller on the gorgeous island of Mallorca. I was there for a friends wedding and decided to leave the laptop at home and due to hating typing on my phone, didn’t write anything. Poor excuse, I know!
Today’s review isn’t the beach beer and is instead another Northern Monk brew and another that you can find in the supermarkets at the moment. This particular one adorns the craft beer shelves of your local Tesco Extra. Tank Petrol is part of Northern Monk’s ‘Faith in Futures’ campaign which sees them offer £5000 grants to different charities and community projects, mirroring how the founders were given the same amount of money to help start the brewery. This is the second version of the beer, which is a New England IPA at 6.5% ABV.
Tank Petrol pours a very hazy, straw-like yellow with a compact white head. The nose is rather light with hints of citrus coming through. The flavour, on the other hand, is bold and packed with a fresh tangerine and and peachy stone fruit taste. The body is very smooth with a lovely creaminess to it and rounds out with a low bitterness bite on the finish.

A quick note on the can art: Northern Monk are well known for very regularly collaborating with many artists, of all different styles, for their can designs. Polish-born, Manchester-based Irek Jasutowicz, better known as ‘Tankpetrol’, is the person behind the this can. Not much to say other than it is a fantastically striking design and I have subsequently had a browse of some of their incredible street art. If you want to check out more of their work, they’ve got plenty over on their Instagram.
This beer is Northern Monk at it’s supermarket best. They have some gimmicky beers on the shelves but then stick out some cracking New England IPA at £3.80 a can. The beer is flavourful and very easy drinking. Light without compromising on flavour. And when each can sold sees money go to good causes, it makes every sip just that bit more satisfying. Certainly pick this one up if you see it during your weekly shop at Tesco!
Score: 8/10
Northern Monk have been in the supermarket game for a while now and I think have been consistently keeping the shelves stocked with good quality beers. What’s been your favourite Northern Monk beer, would love to know below!
