Every once in a while a beer comes along that instantaneously grabs your attention. It isn’t from a flash, hyped up brewery and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg either. Much like my, oddly popular, review of Duff beer, it can be found gracing the hallowed halls of a supermarket. This beer, however, was not purchased due to a novelty connection with a much loved, if now a little tired, TV show. I bought it because of the price. 29 cents to be precise…
The Canary Islands have a budget supermarket chain called HiperDino, and on our holidays to visit family, that is where we do our shopping. It’s got everything you need at fairly reasonable prices. As I discovered this also includes 29 cent cans of beer, titled exactly as such in Spanish; Cerveza. It is, of course, a lager (pilsner, apparently, to be specific) and comes in at a surprisingly strong 4.6%ABV. I couldn’t resist finding out what a beer that cheap tastes like, so here we are!
The beer pours as expected, with a clear golden colour to it and a nice crisp white head. The compliments sadly end there. There is little to no aroma to be found and no flavour either in all honesty. Even with the strength of the beer being what it is, there is nothing desirable on the body. The most noticeable attribute is how flat the beer is. Completely devoid of any gas and bubbles, which is not what you want in a lager.
A quick note on the can art: Describing the can as having art is clearly a massive stretch in this case. Can’t fault the design on being straight to the point however.
Wow! I’m not going to pretend that I went into this beer, thinking that I would miraculously be pleasantly surprised because that would be a lie. It’s a 29 cent beer we are talking about here. However, this is atrocious. I used to buy the four pack of Tesco own brand lager when I finished my Kitchen Porter shift while at university at roughly £2 a four pack and even they had some semblance of flavour. I think the most egregious aspect is certainly how flat it is. It just makes it so tepid and compounds the lack of flavour. I’m sure everyone reading can create their own toilet based humour to describe this beer. I will simply say that it should be given a life sentence without parole. I will give it a 1/10 on my arbitrary scoring system if not simply because of the comedy value and laughs it gave me and my Dad when we tried it. If you want to get slaughtered for under 3 euros and don’t care how you get there, this is the beer for you. Otherwise, even the cheapest beer I’ve ever seen (and will likely ever lay my eyes on) is most certainly not worth the money.
Score: 1/10
What is the worst beer you’ve ever drank? I’d argue this is a contender for one of mine but let me know down below of yours. I’d be tempted to try them in the name of beer science!
