With the current situation I don’t think I’d honestly be able to keep Dry January going! However, I’ve thought I’d try and cut back a little this month. I picked up a selection of alcohol free beers from my last trip to Morrisons to give them a go and see if there are any readily available low or no alcohol beers that also taste good. As always, while I rate these out of ten as usual, they are on their own scale as I think it’s unfair to directly compare them to their alcoholic counterparts. Today’s AF brew is from Suffolk based St Peter’s brewery and it’s a bottle of their ‘Without’ golden ale.
Visually the beer pours a clear gold colour with almost no head. There is a very pungent aroma that reminds you of a brewery, particularly the wort leftover after the mashing process. Flavour isn’t too bad. There’s a nice bitterness throughout from the hops. A light citrus crispness mixed in as well. While it is characteristically thin it is surprisngly not overly thin all things considering.
A quick note on the bottle art: The label itself is classic and self explanatory. My favourite aspect is the very unique bottle shape as well as the embossed brewery name on the front!
An interesting one this. I think flavour wise, for an alcohol free beer, it’s not too bad. The citrus flavours from the hops are very pleasant and it’s not as watery as other AF brews I’ve had in the past. My issue is the smell. It’s not bad, but it’s got that raw malt sweetness or, like I mentioned, the residual wort from the mashing process. When I’ve been in a brewery I’ve loved that smell, huffing it from a beer that tastes very different is a tad off putting for me. Not the worst AF but not the best I’ve had either! If you’ve got any good recommendations of alcohol free beers I’d love to know as well!
