My first ever low alcohol stout today from a brewery that specialises in creating Non/Low Alcoholic brews. Big Drop are based up in Ipswich and have been brewing since 2015. I grabbed this from my local bottle shop Arch Rivals on recommendation that it’s very close to coming across like an actual beer. ‘Galactic Milk Stout’ is a Silver winner at the World Beer Awards so I’m expecting something solid!
Pours espresso coffee black in the glass with a tan head. The pour was actually quite thick which was a good early sign! Toasted coffee aroma on the nose with a mix of burning firewood or the ash after a fire. These notes translate fairly well into the body of the beer. There is a good level of depth in the flavour with the coffee and the ashiness providing a solid bitter finish. Added lactose gives the beer a smoothness while drinking.
A quick note on the bottle art: All Big Drop beers feature their signature ‘Big Drop’ by the looks of it. While at a first glance the bottle looks a little plain there is a wavy holographic pattern in the background lending to that Galactic theme from the name.
Hands down the best alcohol free beer I’ve had. I’ve had full alcohol stouts that have had a thinner body, and being as that is often the issue with AF beers, full credit to Big Drop. A surprising depth of flavour provides that classic milk stout taste and mouthfeel. It also happens to be gluten free as well! This is a toasty and warm beer that I would not have known was low alcohol if I had tasted it blind. Perhaps it goes to show that dedicated low alcohol brewers are the best port of call when searching for a solid alternative!
