Beer Review: Rhubarb & Custard Sour – Tiny Rebel Brewing Co.

Back to back with another from my Tiny Rebel batch. This was one of the beers I was most looking forward to trying because for one, it’s a sour, and secondly I was incredibly curious to see if they could genuinely get a beer to taste like Rhubarb and Custard. So without further ado, this is my review of Tiny Rebel’s 4% ABV Rhubarb and Custard Sour!

The visual on this beer is really interesting with a lovely pink/rose-gold colour to it. Good carbonation to the beer gives it a nice head. Initial fruitiness on the nose followed up by an amazing vanilla custard and biscuit. A great aroma that prepares you well for the flavour. The initial taste is lovely and tart which is the rhubarb aspect. This flows well into a sweet vanilla finish, leaving a moreish, biscuity aftertaste. The initial sourness is incredibly well complimented by the sweet finish for a well balanced beer.

A quick note on the can art: As with the previous Tiny Rebel review this again is the perfect beer to attract your attention in a crowded supermarket shelf. Funky colour scheme that matches the beer itself.

This is a very clever beer. When I first saw it, I though there was chance of the beer either being overly sour or sickly sweet. However, they’ve achieved a very good balance between the two in my opinion. This is likely to be as close as a beer can get to tasting like the old school rhubarb and custard sweets. I’d personally like the rhubarb flavour to come in more as I feel it’s not quite prominent enough. The ABV is at the right level so as to not taste overly alcoholic and mask the flavour of the beer. Tiny Rebel should be proud of this one, definitely recommend anyone to pick this up and give it a try!
