Beer Review: Carnival – Fourpure Brewing Co.

Fourpure, a month or so ago, released their ‘Globetrotter’ bundle. Six new beers loosely based on various locations around the world. Most of these beers were super funky so I brought a couple with me to Cornwall for my friends to have a go at as well. First up is ‘Carnival’, inspired of course by Rio de Janeiro it is a 4.5% ABV Coconut and Lime Sour, so already well up my alley.

The beer pours an incredible gold colour with a slight haze. On the nose both the coconut and the lime come through in absolute abundance. An incredibly inviting aroma. That initial taste of lime is very tart but full of flavour that is fresh and moreish. However, the beer is well balanced with the oats added giving a smooth biscuity finish to the beer and the lactose a lovely mouthfeel. A high level of carbonation really gets all that beer moving around the mouth maximizing flavour. Main complaint for me is that the coconut aspect does very little for me in the flavour of the beer and goes missing.

A quick note on the can art: I mean it’s super funky and matches the title of the beer of course. Whoever is the artist knows what they are doing because if this was on a supermarket shelf it would be gone. Really vibrant.

What a cracking start to this Fourpure bundle. Potentially the most sour sour beer I’ve had so far. It really was a mouth pucker but was so well balanced it was such an enjoyable and unique drinking experience. Would never recommend this to someone who’d never had a sour beer as I can see it putting them off instantly. But if you are a fan do yourself the favour and try and pick this up if you can!

Score: 8.5/10
