Another beer from the new range available at Morrisons! Craft beer heavyweights BrewDog have dropped a couple of new brews into both Morrisons and Tesco stores which look like they could be exciting. It’s been a little while since I’ve reviewed a BrewDog beer and all the ones I have reviewed have been a part of a their collaborative series. So I’ve gone for what I think is one of the more interesting beers ‘Fake Empire’ a sour hazy IPA coming in at 6.2% ABV.
The beer pours a very hazy gold colour with a large white head. On the nose there is an amazing citrus fruit medley coming through with a mix of lime and grapefruit. The first sip is a little tart to begin with but as you drink more that tartness becomes a little invisible. The body of the beer is a pleasant citrus hop and the finish you get a creamy biscuitiness being given by the added lactose and oats I imagine.
A quick note on the can art: A black label with the name of the beer covers the typical BrewDog logo. It’s a weird one as it simultaneously looks quite crowded but also quite simple. I think I like it.
An interesting beer this one. For me this is certainly far more IPA than it is a sour. There is most certainly a tasty hop to the beer but I don’t think they’ve struck the balance right with the sourness. That tartness fades very quickly which wasn’t what I was expecting. Perhaps for sour novices this is the ideal beer. My Dad, who isn’t a sour fan at all, actually quite enjoyed the sip he had. However, for me it falls a little flat although, it’s a decent beer regardless.
Score: 6/10
