Where as Lidl seem to only have the Hatherwood Craft Beer Co. for their own range of contract brew beer, Aldi appears to have a couple. Today’s beer is from The Buckthorn Brewery, although it is just another own brand and has been brewed especially for Aldi stores. That said there’s nothing wrong with the own brand brews and they are often effective and a lot more affordable. ‘Stateside IPA’ is a West Coast style IPA coming in at 5.5% and an affordable £0.99 a can!
Visually the beer pours a clear gold colour. A surprisingly fragrant nose that has a nice citrus tang of grapefruit. There is also touch of tropical fruit but the citrus is the prominent aroma. Actually quite flavourful and crisp. The Citra hops used certainly come through giving it a tangy, bitter body. That bitterness comes through on the finish too but isn’t overbearing and is genuinely quite moreish.
A quick note on the can art: A little on the busy side but I quite like it. Bold and in your face it certainly lives up to the Stateside name!
I am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed drinking this. It apparently has about 7 different hops in it which I certainly can’t taste and is probably overboard and unnecessary. However, those base grapefruit, citrus flavours are genuinely enjoyable. An appropriate level of bitterness makes this drinkable and fresh. At the price point you can’t really go wrong and is one of the better own brand beer I’ve had since starting this blog!
