It’s a new brewery for today’s Stout Sunday and a gluten free one at that. While there are an ever increasing number of gluten free beers available the majority end up being lagers or IPAs. So when my Dad finds an online store selling a variety of GF stouts and porters for the winter he couldn’t be happier. Bought from Taylor’s Gluten Free Beer Network this is Brass Castle Brewery and their porter ‘Hygge Figgy’. It’s been brewed with fig, blueberry and almonds at 5.7% ABV.
The beer pours a cola like colour with the blueberry or fig bleeding through. Very little head on the pour. A gorgeous sweet nose packed full of fig and blueberry. That blueberry is instantly evident in the flavour providing a tame sweetness that doesn’t overbear on the underlying smokiness of the porter body. The fig does go slightly missing in the flavour for my taste. However, the finish continues the blueberry trend with a complimentary nuttiness to match it.
A quick note on the can art: Another great can design today this time from Julie Dodsworth. Adorable little foxes on a snowy backdrop works very well with the black can.
A really good gluten free dark beer. While I do think the body is a tad on the thin side they’ve used the adjuncts (the blueberry and almond in particular) very well to create an interesting porter. It’s hard to find gluten free dark beers and even harder to find one with an interesting flavour combination. If that fig had come through more it would have truly been exceptional. Very drinkable and perfect for these cold winter months.
