Beer Review: Marmalade Porter – Wold Top Brwery

A gluten free dark beer today from a new brewery! Yorkshire based Wold Top do a few gluten free beers in their line up including this 5% Marmalade Porter. This brew has actually won quite a few awards including the country winner at the 2017 World Beer Awards and a third place in the World Gluten Free Awards 2018. So with that in mind the pressure was on for this to be a cracking beer!

Visually the beer is absolute jet black oil in the glass. So much so you can see my reflection! A beige head sits on top as well. On the nose there’s an awesome mocha like quality to the aroma full of chocolate and coffee. There is also a hint of that marmalade in the back too. The marmalade plays a role in terms of the flavour but there is a really good rich, coffee taste from start to finish with a lovely roasted bitterness to round it off.

A quick note on the bottle art: Classic brown bottle with a old school imagery mixing the more modern wind turbines. A throw back label in a lovely orange marmalade colour.

A fantastic option for gluten intolerant folks looking for a truly classic dark beer. While I think that marmalade could have come through more on the body, the light hints compliment coffee flavours brilliantly. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this combination before as it seems so obvious. It’s not a crazy or funky porter with all sort of flavours or a super high ABV. However, it’s got the basics right and on a cold winters day I could very easily sink a few pints of this. Classic and warming!

Score: 8/10
