Much like how I’ve been meaning to watch the movie ‘Layer Cake’ for a while, I’ve equally had this beer in the fridge to try for a couple months. Released into Morrisons by heavyweights BrewDog, ‘Layer Cake’ is a 7% ABV Marshmallow and Chocolate Stout. I’m always a little concerned of marshmallow flavours in a stout because I’ve found it has the tendency to make it overly sweet.
Visually the beer has an aubergine hue to it with a large tan head. Super sweet nose to the brew that reminds me of the strawberry syrup you get on your 99 from the ice cream van! The flavour is quite varied. A classic coffee bitterness with a milk chocolate creaminess. The sweetness in the beer gives of a raspberry ripple type of vibe. A touch of bitterness to the finish and you can certainly taste the booze.
A quick note on the can art: One of the better, more interesting BrewDog cans. Keeps the same classic aesthetic but with a chocolate drip. Certainly stands out on the supermarket shelf.
This is one sweet beer! Layer Cake certainly has the classic attributes of a stout with the chocolate and coffee flavours. However, as expected, the marshmallow is supremely sweet and tastes more akin to artificial fruit flavourings. It’s not a bad beer overall and you could probably have it as a substitute to your after dinner dessert. Personally, I would prefer a small sized can for my tastes.
