Beer Review: Mallow Laser Quest – BrewDog

Tesco have a new beer range in! It’s been absolutely ages since the supermarkets updated their craft beer selection but it appears that Tesco are the first to stick some new brews on the shelves in 2021. The new range includes some of the typical breweries that have been stocked previously so their aren’t any crazy surprises. However, they are all breweries that produce dependable and tasty craft beer. Up first I thought I’d give heavyweights BrewDog’s new brew a try, particularly as I just jumped in on their Equity for Punks investment! ‘Mallow Laser Quest’ is a Marshmallow and Pineapple Hazy IPA at 6% ABV.

Visually the beer pours a hazy gold colour with a fluffy white head. A really fragrant and punchy nose that is very reminiscent of pineapple candies or even Parma Violets. The body of the beer is really well balanced with a sweetness that isn’t overbearing, contrasting well with the light IPA hoppiness. The pineapple flavour is certainly evident reminding me of those sugared pineapple chunk sweets. The finish is really soft and pleasantly moreish making for a drinkable brew.

A quick note on the can art: A very similar design to most BrewDog beers. Interestingly however, there isn’t a label. The whole design is part of the can itself which is something I haven’t seen on a beer before.

I think this is a really good craft beer to have as part of a supermarket range. They’ve nailed the sweetness for me as I was originally expecting it to be slightly sickly. The candied pineapple or Parma Violet flavour is rather nostalgic and the bitterness reminds you you’re still drinking a beer. For me, personally, the actual marshmallow flavour isn’t there. However, I have yet to taste a beer that has nailed that specific type of sweetness. I’d make an argument for this being a good gateway into craft beer if you have a sweet tooth. I would certainly have this again and one of BrewDog’s more interesting offerings of late.

On a side note, these new Tesco beers are currently on offer at £2.40 a can or just £2 with a club card, which is good value I think.

Score: 7.5/10
