Beer Review: Neutrino – Atom

It’s Stout Sunday and today I’m reviewing the last beer from my Premier Hop order I made just before Christmas. All the beers I bought have been solid to outstanding so once I’ve whittled down my recent supermarket purchases I may have to treat myself to another order. I’ve gone for yet another new brewery, this time based in Hull, in the form of Atom! The founders have a background in science so the names of the beers are similarly themed. ‘Neutrino’ is a 6% ABV Coffee & Vanilla Stout.

The beer pours an almost jet black colour with a small tan head. There is a great aroma of fresh, toasted coffee beans on the nose like you’ve walked into a coffee shop. The beer tastes like it’s described. It has a solid base with nice chocolate and roasted coffee with a hint of the vanilla sweetness. The body is slick and smooth making for easy drinking while leading onto that classic stout bitterness on the finish.

A quick note on the can art: A really slick and clean can design. The pattern of atoms or neutrinos on the side remind me of the drawings you do when learning how solids, liquids and gases work in school.

On the whole this is a solid stout. While it doesn’t provide an extraordinary drinking experience it certainly does what it says on the tin. The aroma is perhaps the highlight with a delightfully heavy coffee smell. I think if the vanilla had shone through a bit more, the beer as a whole would be elevated. That said, it’s simplicity is perhaps a benefit as it does ensure a drinkable brew that’s not too overpowering. I would happily have a couple of these on a cold winters evening.

Score: 7.5/10
