A new brewery for me today! Burnt Mill is a brewery I have seen floating around on my Instagram feed for a while. They are based up in Ipswich and from what I’ve seen, they have a tendency to have gorgeous can designs. My first beer from them will be ‘Pintle’ a pale ale featuring Citra and Cascade hops at 4.3% ABV. This is another one of my pick-ups from the Wanstead Tap.
Visually the beer pours a marmalade colour with a big white head. A rather light nose on this one with notes of grapefruit citrus and touches of mango too. The two hop varieties bring their own flavours to the beer. The Cascade provides a very solid hop bitterness in the body while the Citra is of course bringing a crisp, citrus tang. Despite the hoppiness it is still a fairly smooth drinking beer that leads to a classic moreish finish.
A quick note on the can art: One of my favourite can designs ever. Metallic water colour painting would be my description. You buy with your eyes and that was certainly the case for me with this beer.
The can is of course gorgeous and the beer is pretty decent too. I think for a pale ale they’ve managed to bring a good amount of flavour while going for a a crisper, drier beer overall. What I enjoyed the most is that the characteristics of the two hops present are absolutely identifiable. I think the fruit flavours of the Citra compliment the West Coast hop bitterness of the Cascade. Light and drinkable, it’s a solid pale ale.
Score: 7.5/10
