As I previously mentioned, on my Mikkeller low alcohol post, Sainsbury’s have a range of six craft beers in at the moment. This new range appears to be a collaboration between the supermarket and online beer retailer Beer Hawk who have compiled a variety of different styles from various breweries across the country. Today’s beer is from Brew York, a brewery I’ve heard lots about and have wanted to try for a while now. The brilliantly named ‘Rhubarbra Striesand’ is a Rhubarb Milkshake Pale Ale at 5.5% ABV.
First off the can was filled to the brim, certainly no skimping on volume. Visually, the beer pours a cloudy marmalade colour. A very prominent aroma of Rhubarb on the nose. The first taste immediately reminded me of rhubarb and custard. The lactose adds a very genuine, and complimentary, creaminess to the beer. Sweet on the body throughout but with a nice hop on the finish still.
A quick note on the can art: Living up to the name, there is a funky and bright, side-on portrait of the legend herself, Barbra Streisand.
While the sound of this beer intrigued me, I wasn’t sure what to expect in all honesty. However, I’m glad to say I’m very pleasantly surprised. While it is perhaps a bit on the sweeter side for my tastes it does exactly what it says on the tin and does it well. The milkshake aspect comes through in full force adding that custard, creamy aspect to compliment the rhubarb. It’s bordering ‘nostalgia in a beer’ if you grew up eating rhubarb crumble. It’s soft and rich but I think a good gateway into craft beer for those with a sweeter tooth.
Score: 8/10
