I recently went on holiday to beautiful Cornwall, and more specifically, my old university stomping ground of Falmouth. Falmouth, has recently got a lot more craft beer heavy with a couple of new bottle shops opening up. It is also the home of the wonderful Verdant Brewing Company so of course I had to grab a can or four of their new releases and old classics. The first one I tried was ‘People, Money, Space, Time’ a 3.8% ABV hazy Pale Ale. Despite the low ABV, from previous experiences with Verdant, I had high hopes it could still pack a flavour punch.
Visually, the beer poured a hazy golden colour with a nice tight, white head. The aroma is very citrus heavy particularly with orange and a little grapefruit as well. Although there is certainly mango present on the nose too. The body of the beer is all zest in flavour. Lots of orange and grapefruit peel gives the brew a great bitter, but still fruity taste. There is also a good level of hop from start to finish, balancing well with the fruitier notes.
A quick note on the can art: A pretty abstract and funky design that stood out to me straight away. Perhaps, the reason I was initially drawn to the design is that you don’t often see pure black and white art work on cans. It works very well here I think.
For a sub 4% beer I think this has a lot going on for it. The Citra hops come through in the bucket load with those zesty flavours being the primary taste. However, the beer remains very light, at the same time, making for a refreshing and easy drinking pale ale without the compromise on flavour. I’ve got a couple more Verdant beers in the pipeline that are bigger and hopefully bolder that I can’t wait to sink my teeth into! So keep your eyes peeled for those reviews soon along with a couple new Cornish breweries as well.
Thanks for reading! Cheers!
