Beer Review: King Slayer – Buxton Brewery

It’s been far too long since I enjoyed a beer from Buxton Brewery (no guesses where they’re from)! However, they continue to have a presence on the supermarket shelves, particularly those of Tesco by the looks. I picked up King Slayer a little while back and have only just got around to give this big boozy double IPA a go. It comes in at a solid 8% ABV.

On the pour, the beer haze pure haze for days but with a great fluffy, snow white head as well. Lovely, pungent citrus juice bomb of a nose which translates straight into the body which is packed with flavour. Peaches and cream on the front end with the addition of those classic mango and pineapple flavours. A good sweetness is present which compliments the softness of the body well, allowing for some very easy drinking.

A quick note on the can art: A simple but attractive design. A big dragon with  fire swirling around it makes this a fairly iconic can on the supermarket shelves.

This is up there as one of the best supermarket beer purchases I’ve made I think. The level of flavour present is exactly what you expect from a Double IPA but the lack of alcohol flavour present is even more admirable. Insanely drinkable for an 8% beer. King Slayer is serving as a reminder to me to drink more Buxton!

Score: 9/10
