Beer Review: Chokka Blokka – Williams Bros. Brewing Co.

It’s International Stout Day today so of course I had to go for a stout review! This is from the current range at Lidl. It was actually released in the batch from earlier this year but I wasn’t able to get a hold of it at the time. ‘Chokka Blokka’ is a Mocha Stout from Scottish brewers William Brothers and is not only vegan but comes in an uncharacteristically large 500ml can. Their ‘Talking Head’ pale ale was very solid so looking forward to this.

Pours so jet black you can actually see my reflection in the photo! A light tan head to the beer as well. On the nose the beer is pure roast coffee with a hint of bitter hot chocolate. The beer itself is a little on the thinner side but flavour is good however. I agree with the beer description. There is a lovely coffee bitterness on the finish and rich dark chocolate flavour as well.

A quick note on the can art: Much like the previous beer from them the design is very much a totem pole inspiration. Works well with the larger cans and stands out on the shelves.

This is a really drinkable stout. While on the thin side it still has a a decent level of flavour and the roasted malts bring out a lovely bitterness. A lot of the time stouts are really heavy and even a whole pint is a bit much. However, I’d happily have a couple of these as it is quite light and easy drinking. The best aspect is certainly the cocoa powder like flavour on the end of the beer that really makes up for the thinner texture. Also no added lactose makes this a perfect stout for vegans! A good tipple on International Stout Day.

Score: 7/10

Thanks for reading! Cheers!
