Beer Review: Beer From Beer – Town Mill Brewery

Nestled away in Devon, along the coast, is the town of Beer! Naturally when I was there a (fair) while ago I had to buy a ‘Beer from Beer’. Sadly it appears that both beer and the brewery are no longer in existence. The brewery was based in the town of Lyme Regis and it appears were brewing this beer especially for Rock Villa Off-Licence as the shops details are all along the lable. Most likely this 4.2% golden ale was a white labeled for the shop and was probably a beer they already brewed regularly.

Poured a golden, very clear colour with a good rising carbonation and a well maintaining off white head. There is a slight orchard fruit aroma with apple and pears coming through in small amounts. Flavour-wise there is a malty sweet backbone with that distinctive English hop bitterness to it. There is a hint of lemon-citrus to the body as well which is quite pleasant and helps counter the malt profile a little.

A quick note on the bottle art: Rather cheesy and incredibly simple, it is a photo of the beach at Beer, Devon. ‘Nuff Said!’

Considering I probably left this a bit too long to drink it was pretty solid for what is essentially a basic golden ale. I think the bottle conditioned aspect helps keep that flavour going longer. Very easy drinking and can imagine that a pint of this on cask would be rather nice with the balance of sweetness and bitterness. It is always sad to see breweries go under and hopefully their recipes and beers have been taken over by another local brewery. It appears Lyme Regis Brewery might have taken over the space where they once existed with a suspiciously similar golden ale at the same ABV…On the whole glad I can say, I’ve had the Beer From Beer!

Score: 6/10
