As I previously mentioned, my lovely parents got me some Wylam beers to go alongside my By The River ones! The Newcastle based brewery have been going for 15 years now and I have had one of the beers previously. Before I got into the rest of the brews I thought I’d try what is considered their flagship: ‘Jakehead’. It’s a described as a Supercharged IPA and comes in at 6.3% ABV.
A gorgeous juicy, hazy apricot jam colour on the pour, with just a small white head. Insanely tropical aroma. A nose that’s packed full of pineapple, mango and blood orange. The initial mouthfeel is soft and juicy. The hops are bold and in your face with all those great tropical notes punching through on the flavour as well. Tastes surprisingly boozy but still very moreish. A lovely balanced bitterness on the finish to round things off as well.
A quick note on the can art: Really cool design on this. It’s like a snake or even a hydra coiling around on itself. The design itself was done by Real Eyes.
Wow! What a cracking beer to be known for and I completely understand why it’s the Wylam classic. It most certainly lives up to the description of supercharged, as the beer is loaded with a medley of different flavours. It’s even better when the aroma matches up brilliantly with the taste. I was a little taken aback by alcohol hit considering the ABV but I don’t think that detracted from the overall experience. I imagine drinking a pint of this in the Palace of Arts Exhibition Park, by the brewery, is an absolute dream.
