While visiting Cromarty Brewery we’ve grabbed lunch in a little cafe/pizza spot in the town itself that also doubled up as a gift shop. Some of these gifts available in Sutor Creek Cafe happened to be local beers. I had never heard of Dog Falls Brewing, who are based on the outskirts of Inverness, and decided to grab a few of their cans. ‘Colloidoscope’ seemed the most standard of their beers so I thought I’d start with that. It’s a hazy session pale ale at 4.3% ABV and has even won some national beer awards!
Naturally, pours a hazy pale, straw colour with a light white head. The aroma has those classic citrus scents to with little hints of stone fruits mixed in as well. The initial mouthfeel is really soft with a nice light hop running through the beer. The main body has a great orange and grapefruit citrus flavour and end on a light bitterness. Very refreshing and incredibly drinkable.
A quick note on the can art: Firstly, what a gorgeous logo. The waterfall running through a forest shaped like a hop is fantastic. Secondly the orange cloudy sky matches the hazy beer very well I think. Lovely can.
This is a seriously good session beer. Dog Falls Brewing have managed to pack a lot of flavour into a 4.3% beer. Lots of juicy citrus flavours with little bits of peach and pineapple in there as well. It’s bold and tasty. The hop level is pretty spot on for a beer like this and my personal tastes. It is most definitely sessionable in the the current heat I could see myself smashing back a couple of these. I’m now rather excited for the other two beers I have from them as this is arguable one of the best session pales I’ve had! The Scots do know how to make good beer!
