Beer Review: Golden Milk – North Brewing x Fieldwork

I’ve had a few North Brewing beers in the past but they have all been from their supermarket range. Following them on Instagram for almost a year now, they’ve been putting out some amazing looking brews. So when I saw this, in one of local corner shops of all places, I didn’t hesitate to grab it. I originally had this beer, ‘Golden Milk’, on a beer walk and loved it so much I grabbed another can to review! In collaboration with California’s Fieldwork Brewing, North have created an Apricot, Coconut and Turmeric Sour at 6% ABV.

Visually the beer pours pure apricot orange in colour. The head dissipated very quickly on this one leaving you with what looks like a glass of juice. The aroma on the nose is heavy on the apricot with a little sweetness. The beer itself is very fruit forward on the front end with little dashes of the turmeric coming through brilliantly. The coconut comes through as well adding to the creamy texture of the beer. Importantly, it is still a proper sour with a great sharpness to it that ends up being rather moreish.

A quick note on the can art: A simple, uncluttered marble-like design. The gold waves are a contrasting, smoother texture compared to the rest of the label.

What a fascinatingly strange but brilliant concoction. All the ingredients sound like things you’d find in an incredible curry rather than a beer, yet they work so well together. As a sour this is lovely. The turmeric comes through so well and compliments the fruity flavours, without being overpowering. The coconut, in combination with the added oats, gives the body a balancing soft, creaminess after you’ve been hit by the sharp sour tang on the front. Apparently there is cinnamon present in the beer but I unfortunately couldn’t taste it. A very drinkable and tasty sour that has given me a great insight into some of the wild things North Brewing can produce!

Score: 9/10
