A tipple from Christmas day itself! A recent addition to the craft beer shelves of Lidl, Cold Town Beer, like many that appear on the budget supermarkets shelves, is from Scotland. Edinburgh to be precise. A fairly recent brewery, having started in 2018, they had a couple of weird sounding beers that naturally I had to pick up. First on the roster is their ‘Pornstar Martini Ale’; how could I say no! This beer comes in at a rather light 4.6% ABV considering it is trying to emulate the cocktail of the same name.
The beer pours a clear golden colour with lots of carbonation rising to rather wispy white head. As expected with a Pornstar Martini beer there is lots of passion fruit on the nose which does carry on to the flavour itself. There is a little dry bitterness to the finish which I think is a nice contrast to sweet fruitiness of the passion fruit.
A quick note on the can art: I quite like the simplistic clean design. It actually caught my eye in the supermarket aisle and made me have a closer look before finding out what kind of beer it was!
Overall it kind of does what it says on the tin. They’ve added passion fruit and lactose to try and get that Pornstar Martini flavour and it certainly tastes of the fruit but not so much anything else. Looking at it without the description I’d argue it is a average but fairly drinkable fruited pale ale. Nothing remarkable which is fine considering you’re not paying more that £1.50 for a tin of it. Worth getting once for the gimmick I’d say but more interesting fruited ales out there.
Score: 5/10
