A new brewery for the reviews but not a new brewery for me personally. Today’s beer is from Black Sheep, a North Yorkshire based outfit, from whom I have had their Milk Stout. Another interesting beer style today in the form of a Milkshake IPA! I’ve seen and heard a bit about the style but never had the chance to try one until now. They are brewed with added lactose and in this case pineapple. So, coming in at 5.3% ABV this is ‘Pineapple Milkshake’.

Visually the beer pours a clear, gold. As is evident from the photo, the beer is very well carbonated, with the bubbles rolling up the inside of the glass. The nose of the beer is very pleasant with a mix of pineapple and vanilla. It almost resembles a pineapple flavoured milk, like the sort of smell you might get from an Actimel. Very interesting. Flavour wise there is also quite a lot going on. There is a slight bitterness from the hoppy IPA side of the beer followed by a sweeter finish that lingers. Quite a creamy mouthfeel on the end as well which I imagine the lactose is lending to it. The carbonation levels also do a good job of pushing the flavours around the mouth.

A quick note on the can art: I really like the rams head and the mosaic of colours used. However, the sacrifice is the actual name of the beer and style are tucked away in the corner. As per the picture, you can’t really tell what it is with out picking it up in the supermarket.

I am now very fascinated by the Milkshake IPA style. The creaminess the lactose adds to the body of the beer is genuinely delightful. I really enjoyed this one. My biggest criticism for me is the actual beer itself isn’t as super punchy and juicy as I would have personally liked. I would have loved for the pineapple aspect to really come through in the taste. However, it is still a lovely beer and the hop is well balanced with the sweetness.
