Beer Review: Souropod (Mango. Raspberry & Vanilla) – Staggeringly Good Brewery

Today’s review is going to be an interesting one. Triple fruited sour beers are becoming popular at the moment and this will be my first! Portsmouth based Staggeringly Good Brewery has a series called ‘Souropod’ showcasing a variety of their sours. This beer is their Imperial Triple Fruited Gose style sour featuring raspberry and mango as the fruits. I’ve seen there are often arguments that these shouldn’t be classified as beer (for reasons that will be made clear!) but I’m open to anything and everything.

As you can see even from the image the beer is not just hazy but genuinely thick. Pours out like a smoothie as a result of all the fruit added. Unsurprisingly, as a result, no head on the beer. In the same way it looks like a glass of mango smoothie it smells like a sour mango. As expected the initial flavour is tart mango juice with sharp raspberry finish. The sourness drops the more you drink and the absence of bozziness to the beer makes it very, very drinkable.

A quick note on the can art: Absolutely gorgeous art by Hannah Horn. Reminiscent of something out of a textbook or in a museum on their display boards. One of my favourites.

Oh wow! Maybe the most interesting beer I’ve reviewed so far. As you pour and drink it, every sign is pointing to it not being a beer. There is so much fruit in it that it genuinely is like a boozy smoothie, that’s how thick this is. That said it’s got hops, it’s got yeast and it’s got barley. Everything your standard beer has, this has just with the addition of a ton of fruit. If you’re okay with that and you like things a little sour, you will love this beer. I think it is fantastically tasty with lovely mango blending into raspberry for a smooth drinkable sour beer. I do however think the vanilla goes missing and I’m not sure I personally get the salted component that accompanies the gose style. All in all a fascinating take on beer!

Score: 8.5/10
