After a trip across the pond with yesterday’s review, we return to some of the Lidl range. Sadly it’s my last Loch Lomond brewery beer. They’ve been some of the most consistently quality beers I’ve had the pleasure of trying since setting up the blog. This is their ‘Southern Summit’ an American Pale Ale at a sessionable 4% ABV. And, as always with Lidl beers, available at a cracking price of just £1.79.
Pours a pale apple juice like colour with a haze and light foamy head. On the nose the beer is super fruity. Heavy citrus notes primarily, with grapefruit the focus. Hops come through well on the body of the beer. Despite a low ABV there’s a strong, fruity flavour throughout. The finish gives you that classic soft bitterness that ends up being rather moreish.
A quick note on the can art: In the same style as their ‘Zoom Time’ beer. Sky blue and forest green play well in this artistic hiking scene.
As I mentioned in the intro, Loch Lomond are just brilliantly consistent in the quality of beer they produce. It’s a classic APA with a great citrus forward flavour and a good level of hop. Incredibly clean and very drinkable overall. Lidl are on another level to other supermarkets by providing beer like this at such affordable prices. The Loch Lomond range is a really good gateway into craft beer, in my opinion, and I look forward to one day being able to visit the brewery.
