Trying to focus on the Lidl reviews at the moment to give people a chance to buy them before they disappear from the stores! We’ve had a couple of Drygate beers at this point and this one is ‘Tone Burst’ a Rhubarb Berliner Weisse. In accordance to the style, it is a a low 3.2% ABV which might be the lowest so far on the blog.
Visually the beer pours a hazy straw colour with a light white head. The rhubarb certainly comes through on the nose along with the typical tartness from a sour beer. In the flavour, the beer has a really light tartness that is more lemon citrus than rhubarb I think, but still very tasty. The low carbonation of the beer compliments it really well, as with the light sourness and 3.2% ABV ‘Tone Burst’ becomes quite drinkable for a sour beer. A slightly sweet biscuity finish almost makes you think of rhubarb crumble.
A quick note on the can art: Very different to the previous beer I reviewed from them, ‘Crossing the Rubicon’, which has artwork. For this they’ve gone for a multicoloured diamond pattern surrounding the name of the beer which I like more in all honesty.
This was the only sour beer from the Lidl range that I could find and I see why they’ve chosen it. It’s a tough style to get into. My Dad, for example, is not a fan despite me forcing him to try them all. Tone Burst however has a softer kick compared to most but still has a nice flavour without too much being lost. Personally would have loved for that rhubarb to come out more in the flavour but still a very affordable and tasty beer.
