Beer Review: Advent Ale – Hogs Back Brewery

As we get ridiculously closer to Christmas I’ve chosen a more festive brew for today’s review. ‘Advent Ale’ is from Hogs Back Brewery who are based out of Surrey. You might recognise them from their logo or their popular, widely available beer T.E.A. At 4.4% ABV this Ruby Ale is hoping to inspire some festive flavours and I’m looking forward to my first Hogs Back brew.

The beer pours an aubergine like colour with a quickly dissipating off white head. While not clear in the photo there is a nice rising carbonation. On the nose you get a sweet, malty coffee like aroma. That smell transfers well into the flavour and body of the beer. You get that coffee bitterness on the finish that makes up for it being a little thin. Reminds me of stout more than anything.

A quick note on the bottle art: I love their logo, I think it’s got to be one of my favorites going in all honesty. Super traditional and the snowy Christmas aesthetic works very well.

I’m a bit conflicted on this as while I did enjoy the beer I felt that overall it wasn’t anything special. In all honesty it reminded me more of a standard stout than anything else. The resulting malty coffee flavours were incredibly pleasant but I felt the suggested flavours of liquorice and chocolate weren’t there. A classic ale that I think I would enjoy more on cask in a nice village pub by a fire. Hogs Back do an array of classic English style beers and I’m definitely keen to sample some others!

Score: 5.5/10

Thanks for reading! Cheers!
