It has been a while since I’ve reviewed an own brand brew and I’ve decided to go with ALDI once more. This is from 10-4 Brewing one of a couple craft beer facades that they use. According to Untapped it appears to have been contract brewed with Hog’s Back whose Christmas beer I reviewed last year. It’s a Brut IPA so the expectation is for it to be quite crisp and dry.
Visually, the beer pours a clear gold with evident carbonation rising up to a quickly fading white head. Not much at all on the nose. Reminiscent of a macro lager in that regard. Certainly lives up to the ‘Brut’ aspect of the beer with a dryness throughout. However, there is little no flavour to the body resulting in not only a boring beer but a borderline unenjoyable experience.
A quick note on the can art: I like the designs for the 10-4 Brewing range. That traditional African painting style is really funky.
After being pleasantly surprised by their Indian Pale Lager this was seriously disappointing. While the Brut aspect is fine the IPA aspect is completely absent. This consequently means there is nothing to help balance out the dryness and as a result you are left with a dry, fizzy and flavourless beer. The ambition was there with a unique style but it has been poorly executed for my tastes. Personally, I’d rather just grab a macro lager. By far my least favourite offering that ALDI have put out.
Score: 3.5/10
